I hope you had a great weekend!  On Friday, I attended an alumni event for a company I used to work for.  Even though I only worked there for a few years, it is fun to reconnect with friends and former co-workers.  Part of the event included a panel of current employees and alums.   Every year, I learn/am reminded of a few nuggets of great career advice from the panel.

One of the the things that I sometimes struggle with is the desire to move onto to the next level quickly and comparing myself to where I think I should be in my career vs. where I am.  I’ve definitely been feeling this over the past few weeks.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m lucky to be where I am, but I also know I want to achieve a lot more.

Sometimes someone says what you need to hear exactly when you need to hear it.  In this case, it was one the the alums who has gone onto start a successful education startup.  His career advice was to always have perspective around your career and where you are.  As he mentioned, the average career lasts 40 years (!).  If it takes a year longer than planned to get to the next level, that is just blip over the course of that 40 year career.   Of course, that doesn’t mean don’t kick butt every day and keep your eye on the prize.  It just means to ease up a little on yourself in terms of timing.  Everything happens in due course.

I don’t know if anyone else needed to hear that, but it stuck with me.  I think it goes along with being present and enjoying the ride, which is one of my goals for this year.  Sometimes, you just need a little reminder, which I thought I would share.

On the fashion front, I recently picked up these seersucker ankle fit pants at Ann Taylor.  They comes in 2 cuts.   I’m wearing the Devin cut, which is a little curvier.  This seersucker pants outfit is the perfect summer work option and transitions nicely to a night out when you lose the jacket.  Not to mention they are on sale for $24 (including the extra 40% off)!  This is the perfect time to stock up on classic summer pieces you will wear for years!
