5-tips-for-surviving-a-long-flight

I’m so excited!  I’m getting a head start on the July 4th weekend today.  I’m off to Spain since one of my good friends is getting married outside of Barcelona.  I haven’t been to Spain since I studied in Sevilla many years ago and I’m so excited to go back.  I love Spain and the Spanish language.  I actually used to watch telenovelas (Spanish soap operas) in high school to improve my vocabulary!  They are a little over the top, but soo good!

You may not know, but I love to travel.  My goal is to fill up my passport before it expires.  I have 4 more years and I just had an extra set of pages added so I’m making my list of places to go.  One of my friends just completed his goal of visiting 100 countries.  I have a long way to go, but #goals!

Anyway, since I’ve been lucky enough to travel a lot internationally, I figured I would share some of my tips for surviving a long flight.  I’m very lucky since I can fall asleep anywhere (I almost never make it through a movie!), but even if you don’t like to or can’t sleep on planes I have some tried and true things you can do to make it through your flight and set yourself up for a successful beginning to your trip!

5 tips for surviving a long flight

  1. Wear comfortable clothing and layer – This one may seem obvious, but the last thing you want is to be stuck on a long flight in too tight or uncomfortable clothing.  I’m wearing the outfit above on my flight today.  I normally wear these jeans which are so soft and stretchy, black leggings, or boyfriend jeans.  I also always bring an extra layer or two, like the sweater tied around my waist, since I’m always cold on planes!
  2. Drink lots of water – Airplane air is very dry and can dehydrate you very quickly.  I always buy 2 -3 big bottles of water for the flights.  My friends make fun of me, but there is nothing worse than feeling dehydrated and gross.  I also like to bring a little extra lotion as my skin gets very dry.
  3. Avoid (or limit) alcohol – While a glass or two is fine, alcohol dehydrates you and the altitude can make the impact even stronger so I always limit myself to one glass of wine.  Trust me, there are few things worse than being hungover on a flight!  Alcohol can also interrupt your sleep which can be a problem on overnight flights.
  4. Bring your flight essentials – My essentials include my iPad with magazines, Kindle with books, Iphone with podcasts, headphones (so much more comfortable than the ones you can buy!), an eye mask (helps block out light to make it easier to sleep), socks (my feet are always cold!), and a scarf which can double as a blanket. Depending on where I’m going and what seat I’m in, I might also add a neck pillow so I can sleep.   Even though it sounds like a lot, these essentials make the flight so much better!
  5. Begin to adjust to the new time zone a day or so before your flight – I’m flying to Europe which is 6-7 hours ahead of Atlanta.  Even though I’m writing this at midnight, I normally would start going to bed a little earlier than normal so I can start adjusting to my new time zone.  I will definitely start adjusting on the flight today.  Tomorrow is going to be a little painful since I’m going to have to power through all day to beat my jet lag.  I’m a firm believer that if you give into jet lag, it makes it so much harder for your body to adjust.
